Announcing the 2024 College Sports Medical Expense and Sports Insurance Study

A-G Administrators is excited to announce the upcoming release of our 2024 College Sports Medical Expense and Sports Insurance Study. This study builds on the foundational insights of our 2023 survey, which brought to light essential statistics like the average insurance premium across divisions and the extent of coverage for injuries and general medical care.

As we ready ourselves to unveil our 2024 sports insurance study, we are excited to share how this edition will explore new frontiers, including the impact of the NCAA Transformation Committee Recommendations.

Insights from 2023: A Foundation for Future Exploration

Our 2023 sports insurance study highlighted critical data points such as insurance premiums, coverage extent for injuries, general medical care, and mental health support. For example, some of the data on what schools pay for included:

  • 95% said they pay for injuries
  • 22% said they pay for general medical care
  • 34% said they pay for prescriptions
  • 6% said they pay for vision for all
  • 16% said they pay for vision for some
  • 4% said they pay for dental for all

Other important figures included:

  • Risk management is involved in the decision regarding coverage at 13% of institutions, and 21% include the athletics business office
  • The average deductible, along with other out-of-pocket costs paid, is almost $74,000
  • The average annual cost of insurance premiums is $118,000
  • The average insurance premium across all divisions is $200,000

These insights were pivotal for athletic directors and administrators in benchmarking their practices and understanding the insurance landscape. As we prepare to release the 2024 study, we anticipate offering even more detailed analyses and recommendations to further assist institutions in optimizing their insurance strategies and enhancing student-athlete welfare.

What to Expect from the 2024 Study

The 2024 College Sports Medical Expense and Sports Insurance Study is set to be a valuable publication, offering a comprehensive overview of the current state of collegiate athletics medical expense and insurance. This report will not only provide data and analysis but also serve as a crucial tool for educational institutions in managing their sports insurance programs effectively.

We are dedicated to ensuring our clients have access to the most relevant and up-to-date information to make informed decisions about their insurance policies and coverage options. In addition to offering insights into insurance premiums and coverage, the 2024 study will delve into the management of insurance and medical expense programs by sports medicine departments, the role of risk management in decision-making, and the evolving landscape of coverage for student-athletes.

Given the new recommendations by the NCAA Transformation Committee, the insurance landscape is changing quickly. Those recommendations will prompt changes to how athletic directors and administrators approach their coverage, opening up questions such as:

  • Should they entertain other lines of insurance?
  • Should they look at disability, life, and health insurance?
  • Should they consider mental health resources?
  • Should they research telehealth services?

By answering those questions—among many others—the report’s holistic approach is designed to provide a complete picture of the collegiate sports insurance and medical expense environment, aiding institutions in navigating the complexities of insurance and risk management.
